Peace, Love, Photography and Hippie Vans

As promised, I wanted to post about the awesomely cool hippie vans I saw last weekend in Medicine Park, Okla. As fun as it was, it only more than doubled my obsession/love/want for one I can call my very own. I have been searching and scouring Craigslist, eBay, want ads, etc. all week trying to find the perfect one. It is still a work in progress. It would probably help if I knew something about motors and other mechanicy type things, but I do not. Daddy's gonna have to take the reign on this one for sure! ;)

I have an idea in my head of how I want it to look. And, by that I mean I want it to run. No just kidding, I do have some standards. Like the ability to be painted vintage light pink. I don't really want the sink and stove. However, I can take that out. Back seats would be a plus ... air conditioner would also be a plus, but the only ones I have found with a/c have been a little newer. I am not opposed to newer though, again ... as long as it runs!

My dream is to use it for my photography business. Cool shoots, prop wagon, that sort of things. Alright, so mainly I just want one, but whatever. Saying it is for my business is better. It could be my signature item. Something I become known for. Heck, who knows? A good conversation starter that is for sure.

So, until my little hippie heart finds a van to purchase I will be fawning over these photos.

Peace, Love, Photography and Hippie Vans, {<-- those all go together, right?}

What To Wear

Hey there friends!

Today, I thought I would talk a little about fashion ... specifically fashion for family and group photos. There are so many possibilities and so many directions to go in. Choosing clothes for photo shoots can be daunting. No matter if you are picking for one or for a whole family it can be challenging.  I am not a fashion expert, but here are 5 tips to help to aid in deciding on photo shoot clothing and a few things to avoid!

{Before you start considering outfits and colors ... think of each individual outfit as a piece that will make up one large outfit instead of focusing on each outfit individually. This will aid in the decision making process. Not everyone has to match, but everyone must flow together.}

1. Find Your Style--
Finding your style can be hard in itself. Think of the finished images and what they will be used for. Dressy? Casual? Country? Urban? Professional? The possibilities are endless. Incorporating your personality into the photos will help make you more satisfied with the outcome. Personally, I believe it is good to feel comfortable in your outfits. If you feel uncomfortable, this will come through in your photos.

Also, it is all a good idea to talk with your photographer to see what locations you will be using. You will want to make sure your outfits match the locations chosen. This can be subjective, but can be important to the desired outcome.

2. Pick a Color Scheme--
In my opinion, color scheme is the most important part of making group outfits match. Think of colors that you already own. Neutral colors are always good with one or two accent colors. Not all members of the photo has to wear the accent color, but incorporating it in a couple outfits will make the colors pop and add interest. Think patterns and texture if you are not into the accent color idea.

It is important to make each individual outfit match, but it is also important to not look overly "matchy matchy."  White and black are always popular, but not always the best options. Black shirts and blouses tends to make people look boxy and white tends to look washed out.

3. Vary the Tops and Vary the Bottoms--
Start with the tops. Find those neutral colors that compliment each other. They don't have to match perfectly, but definitely should work together. Find textures and patterns that will add dimension to the photo like cable sweaters, corduroy, denim, etc. Plaids incorporating accent colors always photograph well. However, one (or two depending on group size) is probably plenty to be wearing patterns. Solid shirts are your friends. Don't forget the simplicity of a solid polo or sweater. Solids can break up the texture and patterns of your accent colors.

Next, move to the bottoms. Not everyone has to be wearing jeans. I feel that is the most common misconception about family photos. Throw in some black pants, khakis, dark denim, light denim, skirts and tights, tall boots, etc. ... anything that compliments your neutral colors. Don't be afraid to mix it up. However, if your bottoms are patterned then you may need to go back to your top selections and tone those down a bit.

4. Accessories. Yes? No? Maybe?--
Accessories are great. However, it is a good idea to keep it simple. Excessive accessories will distract viewers from the actual photo itself. Your photos will be beautiful enough, no need to add extra bling, etc.

5. Timeliness--
Have you ever looked at old photos and thought... "Wow, why did I ever wear this?" I know I certainly have. Therefore, it is smart to keep in mind classic looks. While printed leggings are in style at the moment (depending on who you ask), that doesn't mean they are going to be in style in 2034. Photos are memories that will be remembered forever ... whether you are choosing outfits for senior photos, engagement or family photos, you can never go wrong with classic looks and styles.

Now, go and have fun planning your outfits for family photos! Don't stress, just have fun with it.
And, as always... Pinterest and Polyvore are your friend. Find example of family photos you like and try to recreate with your own spin and blending your family personality and style.

High Five For Friday

Did you know I have two blogs? Because I do!

One is a personal blog and this one! I have already done a "High Five For Friday" post on the Frilly Farm Girl blog today, but I thought I would do one here too ... just focused on photography celebrations/small victories/generally fun things!

I am hoping to make it a permanent addition to the blog. I mean ... who doesn't love to celebrate Fridays anyways?

1. This happened a couple of weeks ago, but I still celebrate it everyday. Who knew a 50mm prime lens could make my heart so happy? I love it. This is my first prime lens. I can already tell it will take a lot of getting used to ... like I have to move instead of zooming in or zooming out. I feel it could be dangerous to my health. I have a history of falling and breaking bones, so I will have to be really careful until I get used to it! I haven't had a real photo shoot with it yet, but that is changing next weekend! Until then I will just play and take random pictures of street signs, cows and my dog.

2. This also happened a couple of weeks ago, but I finally designed and ordered new business cards. I love the end result. I wanted something neutral, so when my little heart decided to change my logo (colors for holidays, etc,) my business cards will still be applicable. And, the black background adds just enough different to be eye catching!

3. I have booked four senior session in the last three days! Eeeek! I can't wait to see all of their personalities come out in their pictures ... that is why I love senior photography. I have known these seniors most of their life... and that kind of makes me feel old!

4. I spent a night this week in Medicine Park. If you haven't been there, you should go. It is so peaceful and fun. My grandparents have a cabin there so we go there often and I always take my camera. I found this cute street sign while I was there. Tin Can Alley .... the future address of my future vintage trailer and/or hippie van!

5. I have mentioned this in my Frilly Farm Girl blog post, but here it is again. A painting party for photographers. Hilarious to say the least.

Well, there you have it! The first HF4F post!

Hope you have a fabulous weekend! I am working on new post for next week ... including a "spring time photo shoot fashion guide," V'Dub in the Park photos and the possibility of Easter photo shoots!

Bridal Brunch

A sweet friend of mine is getting married and another sweet friend is hosting her shower. And, {thankfully} she asked me to design an invite for the special day!

I can already tell how much fun this shower is going to be just based on the details I have heard so far! I can't wait to photograph the day ... and it is a definite bonus that "classic Kentucky Derby attire is encouraged." Floppy hats and heels here we come!

{I changed the names and details for funs ... the real name is not "Rhae Jennedy" although "Jennedy" is  kind of fun to say!

Snow Pretty

It has been a snowy/cold week here, so what better way to embrace the cold than to capture it with my Canon!

Welcome to Grady County!

Pursuit 31

I mentioned in my first post "Pursuit 31" and wanted to talk a little more about it, because I am so incredibly excited!

A few weeks ago, I was blog stalking my good friend, Shae. She is getting married in May (YAY) and her wedding photographer is L. Lanae Photography. I have heard of Lindsey before and wanted to check out her blog. (She is great!)

**Confession-- I don't really usually read blogs unless the picture below or above catch my eye. Which is why I find it funny that I even read this post.**

I found a post where she talked about how her photography business changed when she found Pursuit 31. Thinking this "Pursuit 31" she talked of was a book, I clicked on the link and found the most awesome thing I have ever seen.

Pursuit 31 is a four day conference in Rome ... Georgia that is. It is for creative Christian women ... photographers, bloggers, graphic designers, etc. While I was reading through the website, I felt like God was talking directly to my heart.

"Hey Brenna, you neeeeeeeed to go to this!"

After a little deliberation ... I knew this was something I should and needed to go to! And, wouldn't you know I found this conference one day before registration opened. One day. What? When I read that I was like "whoa, that is weird." Tomorrow. Registration opens tomorrow. Valentines Day.  If before wasn't enough of a sign for me, this one was.

So, I say all of that to now say ... I leave for Georgia in September! I can't wait to meet other bloggers like ... Hannah Brencher, who is the founder of More Love Letters and Karen Stott, who is the a photographer and founder of the Pursuit 31 ministry. Not only am I so excited to learn from others in the industry and hopefully meet other Oklahoma photographer friends, but I am excited to see how Christ uses this conference in my life. I think it is going to be life changing and business changing.

Cant wait to be Rome bound this fall!

Blessed By Babies

If you know me at all then you know that newborns scare me. Yes, scare me! I like them. I think they are so cute and so precious, but I am not about to hold one ... they are so breakable tiny!

Lately it seems that many people are having babies and asking me to take their newborn pictures. Eeeek! I was so excited/nervous! I hadn't done newborn photos ever before and I am not typically an indoor photographer. But, with much research, help from my mom and only a little stress I felt like I could do it!

My intern's baby from a couple of years ago was my first victim client! Rylee Mae is precious! I had so much fun that I have booked several more little ones since then and several more coming up! Good news-- I am no longer scared of the little cuties. However, moms are still required to standby close in case of emergencies!

Here are my favorites that I am allowed to share as of right now! {A few haven't been viewed by the parents, so I will share those at a later date!}

Meet Rylee!

I went to high school with Rylee's dad and Rylee's mom was my intern a couple of years ago. I had the best time getting to meet Rylee and take her pictures! She was the best little baby! After she went to sleep, we could pretty well do anything with her. She was born in December around Christmas, so the Christmas ornaments were a fun addition!

Meet Kodie!

Kodie was such a sweetie. She was awake most of the time, but never made much of a fuss! She kicked and swatted her hands the whole time, but we managed to get a lot of cute pictures! She only cried once at the end, but even at that she was a sweetie!

Meet Hayden!

Hayden was my first little boy to do! And, talk about a cutie! He laughed, smiled, kicked and rolled most of the time! No fuss and no tears-- I am a fan of that! I worked with his grandma when I worked for extension and I was so excited when her daughter called me about pictures! I had just got a new lens when I went to take these pictures, so I think I took almost 500 pictures in less than 2 hours ... so needless to say I have a lot of cute faces and expressions for his momma and daddy!

Thanks for stopping by and viewing these cuties! Stay tuned for more to come!

Hi There

Hi there and welcome to the b.davis photography and design blog page! I am so excited to start this new blog in addition to my personal blog {Frilly Farm Girl} and use it to discuss all things photography.

My hopes is to not only have a place for clients to view photos, but also discuss things like what to wear for your session, upcoming events, new happenings and many, many exciting things.

I have been doing photography for a few years now. I almost feel as if I fell into it by accident. I had just graduated from OSU (with a degree in agricultural communications) when my cousin asked me if I would take pictures of her son for his 1st birthday. I said yes (because he is a precious child), but never intended to make a business from photography. After taking his pictures, a few more people asked me to capture their special moments, and then a few more, and then a few more, and now I am beyond lucky to get to do the one thing I love with people/clients that I adore!
I just graduated from SWOSU with my master's degree and have been doing photography full-time while I search for a full-time job. I have loved doing this full-time for the last couple of months and having the chance to reconnect with friends from high school and meet new clients who are friends of friends.

As of Jan. 2014, b.davis photography added "design" to the mix. Graphic design is a rekindled love for me. I have always designed my own logos for b.davis and Frilly Farm, but I am having tons of fun designing logos, branding material, invitations, etc. for others.

I am so excited to see what 2014 holds for b.davis photography and design. I am attending a few different conferences this year including Pursuit 31 and a Ranch House Design Livestock Photography Workshop.
I am so incredibly beyond excited to see God work in my life and business during this year. I can already see new things on the horizon and am anxious to see how it all turns out. In his time though, in his time. :)

To spice things up ... here are  Top Ten Things To Note:
  1. I know every line to "Remember the Titans" and "Sandlot" and those lines come out often ... sometimes during photo shoots.
  2. I have a wonderful family and awesome set of friends.
  3. I have a weird obsession love for VW Vans and Shasta Trailers.
  4. I would wear boots all the time if I could get away with it.
  5. I often have buyers remorse, but I love window shopping & believe in retail therapy.
  6. I love traveling and I want to go back to Chile, D.C. and Lake City.
  7. I make a list for everything.
  8. Making/giving gifts makes my heart real happy.
  9. I am accident prone. For real.
  10. I love photography, of course.

Oklahoma is cold, cold, cold today. This is from the last snow a few weeks ago, but it looks just about the same
today. I plan to venture out tomorrow and take a few pictures of this beautiful weather we are having.

Thanks for stopping by for the first post. Come back again soon!
